About us

The Klein Libertas Theatre was founded on 5 April 1960 and is a registered non-profit company (registration number 2007/017484/08) since 2007. The theatre hosts several community projects, do informal training and produces 3-5 professional shows every year which perform at arts festivals (Volksblad, Aardklop, Innibos, Cederberg, Woordfees, Suidoosterfees, KKNK) and venues countrywide. These productions create an income for professional and amateur actors. Since the Klein Libertas Theatre’s inception it has been one of Stellenbosch’s cultural pillars and has extended it’s role in the nineties to also play an important role in the community. It is not only known countrywide as an established music and theatre venue, but also as a trusted institution for the creation of high quality productions for all ages.

On 13 June 2015 the theatre building, that was rented from the Municipality of Stellenbosch since 1962, burned down. The buildings that survived the fire was demolished early in 2019. This curtailed the theatre’s activities and only the community projects and commissioned work could continue since the devastating fire. The Klein Libertas Theatre is still struggling to find another building to operate from.
